Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced on August 10, 2026, the expansion of the SunTrax testing facility to include a dedicated hub for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and eVTOL aircraft.

Located in Auburndale along the Interstate 4 corridor, the 775-acre campus will provide a controlled environment for manufacturers to test, refine, and certify next-generation aircraft outside of active commercial airspace. According to a press release from the Executive Office of the Governor, active eVTOL test flights are scheduled to commence at the facility by the end of 2026.

Building the SunTrax AirGround ecosystem

The newly designated SunTrax AirGround aims to position Florida as a primary location for emerging transportation technology. The facility is designed to support the concurrent deployment of autonomous surface vehicles and AAM infrastructure, with the long-term goal of relieving road congestion and restoring regional air services.

“By the end of this year, Florida will be actively testing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, while SunTrax Air Ground is actively testing and supporting the deployment of autonomous and connected vehicles.”

DeSantis stated in the official release that the state possesses the innovation-friendly policies, research institutions, and infrastructure required to support the sector. To support workforce development for the AAM industry, FDOT has established partnerships with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Polk State College. These collaborations are intended to prepare students for careers in the evolving aerospace and transportation sectors.

Manufacturer commitments and operational frameworks

The state has already secured commitments from major eVTOL developers to utilize the SunTrax campus. On July 22, 2026, Embraer spinoff Eve Air Mobility announced a formal partnership with FDOT to develop the infrastructure, operational procedures, and airspace navigation frameworks necessary for commercial eVTOL operations in the state.

FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue described the partnership as a step toward achieving the implementation of AAM in Florida. Eve Air Mobility Chief Executive Officer Johann Bordais noted that the state is proactively building the ecosystem needed to support the industry.

Following the governor’s announcement, eVTOL developer AIR confirmed on August 11, 2026, that it will establish its United States headquarters and a production hub at the SunTrax campus. According to reporting by Vertical Magazine, AIR will occupy a 20,000-square-foot facility space. The company plans to relocate its flight test programs to Auburndale and begin manufacturing its AIR ONE personal eVTOL and autonomous heavy-lift cargo aircraft by the end of 2026.

AirPro News analysis

We view the development of purpose-built testing facilities like SunTrax AirGround as a critical bottleneck relief for the AAM industry. As eVTOL manufacturers transition from prototype development to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification, the need for dedicated, instrumented airspace that does not interfere with commercial air traffic becomes paramount. By offering a 775-acre controlled environment, Florida is directly competing with established aerospace testing corridors in states like California, Texas, and Ohio. The concurrent integration of autonomous surface vehicles and eVTOL aircraft at a single site also provides a unique testing ground for the multimodal passenger infrastructure that AAM operators will eventually require to make commercial operations viable.

Heart Aerospace X1 Completes First Flight at Plattsburgh

Heart Aerospace flew its X1 battery-electric demonstrator on August 12, 2026, the first flight for an electric aircraft over 25,000 lbs.

Published

on

Heart Aerospace successfully completed the inaugural flight of its X1 demonstrator on August 12, 2026, marking the first time a battery-electric aircraft exceeding 25,000 pounds has taken to the skies. The 27-minute flight at Plattsburgh International Airport (KPBG) in New York validates core technologies for the manufacturer’s planned 30-seat hybrid-electric regional airliner.

In a press release issued on August 13, 2026, the company confirmed the Heart X1 reached an altitude of 1,100 feet above ground level while delivering more than one megawatt of power. The milestone follows the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issuing a Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category (SAC-EC) for the aircraft in July 2026, which authorized flight testing after a series of structural, propulsion, and taxi evaluations.

Demonstrating commercial-scale electric propulsion

The X1 demonstrator features a 106-foot wingspan, a length of 76 feet, and a height of 24 feet. Heart Aerospace reported the electricity cost for the inaugural flight was approximately $5, a figure the company highlighted to emphasize the economic potential of Electric-Aviation.

Heart Aerospace founder and chief executive officer Anders Forslund stated the flight proved electric aviation is viable at the scale of a commercial airliner.

“Electric commercial aircraft have the potential to fundamentally reshape airline economics and, ultimately, lower the cost of air travel for passengers. This is at the heart of our vision for abundant air travel, with electrification enabling more affordable, frequent, and cleaner air service to and from airports closer to home.”

Pathway to the ES-30 regional airliner

Data gathered from the X1 flight test program will directly inform the development of the Heart ES-30. The ES-30 is designed as a 30-seat hybrid-electric regional aircraft targeting a 2031 entry into service. Heart Aerospace projects the ES-30 will reduce operating costs by more than 40 percent compared with legacy regional aircraft.

The Manufacturers is currently building the first pre-production ES-30 at its pilot manufacturing facility in Los Angeles, California, with flight testing scheduled to begin in 2028. The company relocated its corporate headquarters from Gothenburg, Sweden, to Los Angeles in April 2025 to expand its United States operations, subsequently moving the X1 aircraft to Plattsburgh for flight testing.

AirPro News analysis

The successful flight of the X1 occurs against a backdrop of rising conventional energy costs. With global jet fuel prices averaging $3.50 per gallon for the week ending August 7, 2026, representing a 63 percent year-over-year increase, the economic argument for electric and hybrid-electric propulsion is strengthening. We view the $5 energy cost for a 27-minute flight of a 25,000-pound aircraft as a compelling data point for regional operators looking to decouple their operating expenses from volatile oil markets. The transition from a pure battery-electric demonstrator to a hybrid-electric production aircraft acknowledges the current limitations of battery energy density while still capturing significant operating cost reductions for short-haul routes.

Hyde County EMS Deploys eVTOL for Live 911 Response

Hyde County EMS used a Pivotal BlackFly eVTOL to reach 911 patients ahead of ground ambulances in rural North Carolina.

Published

on

Hyde County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has completed the first operational deployment of an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for routine 911 medical response in the United States, utilizing a Pivotal BlackFly to reach patients ahead of ground ambulances.

Announced in a joint press release on August 11, 2026, the milestone demonstrated a new model for rural emergency response. During one of two live emergency calls, the aircraft arrived approximately 20 minutes before a traditional ground ambulance, allowing a flight-trained paramedic to initiate Advanced Life Support (ALS) significantly earlier.

Operational deployment in rural North-America

Hyde County spans approximately 1,500 square miles of land and water, making it one of the largest and most geographically challenging EMS response areas in the state. To address these logistical hurdles, Hyde County EMS partnered with Code Blue Resources, Pivotal, and Akute Networks to integrate aviation directly into their first-response architecture.

Following more than 300 training sorties, Paramedic Quinn Reece piloted the single-seat eVTOL aircraft directly to the scene of two live 911 calls. Unlike traditional medical helicopters that require large landing zones and focus primarily on patient transport, the Pivotal aircraft is designed to land in small clearings near the patient. This allows the pilot-paramedic to deliver essential medical equipment, such as cardiac monitors and airway supplies, while awaiting ground transport.

“Every decision we make is about getting advanced care to our citizens faster. These missions proved that we can overcome distance, reach patients sooner, and redefine emergency response in rural communities,” said Brook Cox, Chief of Hyde County EMS.

Regulatory framework and aircraft specifications

The missions were conducted under Public Aircraft Operations (PAO) rules. The partners developed a specific concept of operations (CONOPS) for integrating eVTOL aircraft into emergency medical response, with Akute Networks serving as the Aviation Program Manager to establish the operational framework and flight procedures.

The aircraft utilized for the missions was a Pivotal BlackFly, classified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a Part 103 ultralight vehicle. The BlackFly features simplified flight controls that facilitate the cross-training of paramedics and EMS chiefs, eliminating the need for traditional commercial pilot certificates for these specific public operations.

Pivotal CEO Ken Karklin noted that emergency medicine has historically measured response in miles driven.

“When a flight-trained paramedic can fly directly to a patient rather than drive around rivers, farmland and other geographic barriers, advanced medical care begins sooner. This is an entirely new approach to first response,” Karklin stated.

AirPro News analysis

We view the Hyde County deployment as a highly pragmatic approach to early Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) integration. By leveraging the Public Aircraft Operations framework and a Part 103 ultralight aircraft, the operators bypassed the lengthy and complex Part 135 certification process currently gating commercial eVTOL passenger operations. This model shifts the aviation medical paradigm from heavy, expensive patient transport to rapid, lightweight paramedic insertion. If scalable, this “First-to-Patient” strategy could provide a viable near-term use case for single-seat eVTOL Manufacturers while delivering immediate public safety benefits to rural communities.

on

Vertical Aerospace (NYSE: EVTL) secured approximately $100 million in investments in financing commitments on August 10, 2026, providing the capital required to advance the certification and commercialization of its Valo electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Announced in a company press release, the funding package is designed to carry the manufacturer through its Critical Design Review (CDR) phase, expand battery production capacity, and support the build-out of manufacturing facilities in the United Kingdom. The capital injection follows the company’s public piloted flight demonstration campaign at the Farnborough International Air-Shows in July 2026.

Financing structure and timeline

The $100 million financing package consists of multiple tranches from new and existing investors. The structure includes a $35 million equity investment via an underwritten offering of units priced at $1.05 per unit, which is expected to close on August 11, 2026. Additionally, a $25 million issuance from a preferred equity facility with Yorkville Advisors Global, L.P. settled on August 10, 2026.

The largest single component is a $40 million convertible debt financing arrangement with Mudrick Capital Management, L.P. This includes a recently closed $5 million draw and a planned $35 million accelerated draw scheduled for August 12, 2026. Vertical Aerospace noted that the Mudrick Capital financing is based on a non-binding agreement in principle and remains subject to the negotiation and execution of definitive agreements, with no assurance that the terms will be finalized as contemplated.

Beyond private capital, Vertical Aerospace is in advanced discussions with the UK Government for up to £10 million ($13.5 million) in support. If secured, these funds will be directed toward the company’s first full-scale production facilities and charging technologies.

Operational milestones and defense expansion

The financing announcement follows a high-profile operational phase for the Valo program. In July 2026, Vertical Aerospace became the second company globally to complete a piloted transition flight in a full-scale tiltrotor eVTOL. The manufacturer completed five demonstration flights over five days at the Farnborough International Airshow in front of more than 140,000 attendees.

“Following the momentum generated by our progress over the last six months, including our piloted transition demonstrations at Farnborough, we are focused on converting operational progress and partner engagement into continued advancement of our certification and commercialisation strategy. The support, reflected in these financings via new investors alongside further commitments from existing investors, demonstrates strong confidence in Vertical’s market position and progress, providing near-term flexibility to execute the next phase of our plan.”

The statement was attributed to Stuart Simpson, CEO of Vertical Aerospace, in the August 10 press release.

The company is also expanding its defense and European integration efforts. Vertical Aerospace confirmed a partnership with autonomous flight systems provider Near Earth Autonomy and reported interest from the UK Ministry of Defence regarding the aircraft’s hybrid-electric and autonomous capabilities. The manufacturer plans to retrofit its third prototype aircraft for hybrid-electric flight testing in the first half of 2027. On the regulatory front, the company joined VERTI-GO, a European initiative led by Honeywell Aerospace aimed at accelerating eVTOL integration into European airspace.

Vertical Aerospace reports approximately 1,500 pre-orders for the four-passenger Valo aircraft from operators including American Airlines, Avolon, Bristow, GOL, and Japan Airlines.

AirPro News analysis

We view this $100 million financing package as a critical bridge for Vertical Aerospace as the eVTOL sector faces tightening capital markets. Reaching the Critical Design Review is a capital-intensive phase for any clean-sheet aircraft program, requiring significant engineering and testing resources. The reliance on a non-binding agreement for the $40 million Mudrick Capital tranche introduces some execution risk, but the successful Farnborough demonstrations likely provided the necessary technical validation to secure these initial commitments. The parallel pursuit of UK government funding and defense applications indicates a strategic diversification of revenue streams, which will be essential as the company navigates the lengthy certification process ahead of commercial passenger operations.
