Airbus Helicopters has delivered the first NH90 Standard 2 tactical transport helicopter to the French Armament General Directorate (DGA), initiating a phased rollout of 18 specialized aircraft designed for special operations.

The handover took place on July 30, 2026, at the manufacturer’s facility in Marignane, France. According to a press release from Airbus, the aircraft will be operated by the French Army Light Aviation (ALAT) 4th Special Forces Helicopter Regiment based in Pau. The Standard 2 configuration builds upon the existing NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopter (TTH) platform, introducing advanced digitalization and modular communication systems intended to support complex missions in degraded environments.

Technical upgrades and operational capabilities

The NH90 Standard 2 incorporates several hardware and software modifications tailored to the requirements of special forces operators. Key integrations include the Safran Euroflir 410 D electro-optical system and a new digital map generator, which together enhance situational awareness for the flight crew. The airframe features enlarged rear sliding windows designed to accommodate self-protection guns, alongside provisions for a third crew member station.

With the addition of external fuel tanks, the variant achieves an operational range exceeding 1,000 kilometers. The aircraft architecture also emphasizes rapid integration of future technologies.

Integrating a new communications system is a complex and costly process. The NH90 Standard 2 comes pre-equipped with antennas and cabling to accommodate any type of new radio installation. Voice, data, satellite transmission, everything can be installed quickly and easily in the helicopter, which also has the capacity to control drones. It’s revolutionary.

The quote, provided by an unnamed officer from the 4th Special Forces Helicopter Regiment in the Airbus announcement, highlights the platform’s shift toward network-centric operations.

Program timeline and international adoption

The development of the Standard 2 variant began following a contract issued in October 2020 by the NATO Helicopter Management Agency (NAHEMA). Flight testing for the initial prototype commenced in June 2024, leading to the start of production in early 2025. Airbus expects to complete deliveries of the 18 helicopters ordered by France by mid-2029.

The configuration has already secured international interest. In December 2025, Spain joined the program with an order for 31 NH90s in a similar standard.

Textron Aviation Inc. and autonomous flight developer Merlin, Inc. unveiled the Cessna SkyCourier UX concept aircraft on September 14, 2026, proposing an uncrewed, forward-loading cargo variant of the twin-engine utility turboprop designed specifically for Military-Aircraft logistics.

Introduced at the Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) Air, Space & Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland, the concept aims to address the United States Air Force (USAF) requirement for sustaining distributed forces in contested environments. According to a joint press release, the design removes the traditional cockpit to maximize cargo utility, targeting the gap between small tactical drones and heavy military airlifters.

Designing for contested logistics

The military concept of contested logistics focuses on resupplying forward-deployed units in areas where traditional heavy transport aircraft face high threat levels or lack suitable runway infrastructure. The Cessna SkyCourier UX is intended to fulfill the “Last Tactical Leg” of these supply chains without risking aircrew.

To optimize the airframe for autonomous cargo operations, the concept design eliminates the flight deck entirely. This alteration enables a forward-loading architecture featuring a large nose opening and an aircraft kneeling capability. The companies stated that these modifications, combined with integrated loading systems, are designed to facilitate rapid cargo handling in austere locations.

The uncrewed variant retains the core capabilities of the FAA certified Cessna SkyCourier platform. It is projected to carry a payload of approximately 6,000 pounds and accommodate up to three LD3 Cargo-Aircraft containers.

Integrating the Merlin Pilot system

The autonomous capabilities of the Cessna SkyCourier UX rely on the Merlin Pilot software system. Merlin has previously integrated and tested its autonomous flight technology on other Textron Aviation platforms, including the Cessna Caravan and Beechcraft King Air.

Matt George, CEO and founder of Merlin, emphasized the necessity of combining established technologies for military applications.

“Solving contested logistics today takes proven autonomy and a proven airframe. This concept pairs it with a proven platform, the Cessna SkyCourier, to explore what an aircraft could look like when it’s designed around autonomy and cargo instead of a crew.”

Bob Gibbs, Vice President of Defense and Special Mission Sales at Textron Aviation, noted that the concept reflects a commitment to addressing real-world mission challenges by adapting certified products for distributed operational environments.

Current program status

While the base Cessna SkyCourier is an active production aircraft, the UX variant currently exists as a design study and scale model. Textron Aviation and Merlin have not yet announced a launch customer or established a timeline for prototype manufacturing and production.

The development of the concept will likely depend on further engagement with the USAF and other defense operators regarding their specific requirements for autonomous tactical airlift.

US Air Force Names FQ-42A Vengeance and FQ-44A Fury CCAs

The U.S. Air Force has officially designated its first two Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) as the FQ-42A Vengeance and the FQ-44A Fury, signaling a rapid transition toward autonomous mass in the 2030s. Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink announced the names on September 14, 2026, during the Air & Space Forces Association Air, Space & Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland.

In a press release issued by the service, the naming marks a major milestone for the CCA program, which aims to field a large fleet of semi-autonomous unmanned combat aircraft to fly alongside crewed fighters. The announcement follows the June 2026 award of production contracts to General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and Anduril Industries for the first increment of the program.

Official designations and manufacturer responses

The General Atomics FQ-42A will carry the name Vengeance. The manufacturer had previously referred to the design internally as the Dark Merlin, a moniker that will now be retired in favor of the official military designation.

General Atomics spokesman C. Mark Brinkley welcomed the official designation. According to reporting by Air & Space Forces Magazine, Brinkley stated that the company appreciates when customers name their aircraft, adding that the name Vengeance effectively summarizes the platform’s purpose.

The Anduril Industries FQ-44A has been officially named Fury. The defense technology company had already been utilizing the Fury name internally during the development and prototyping phases of the aircraft.

Ambitious procurement targets for autonomous fleets

The Air Force outlined aggressive production and fielding goals for both the CCA and the new Massed Modular Aircraft (MMA) programs. The service intends to purchase a total of 1,000 combat-ready, semi-autonomous CCA systems.

During his keynote address, Meink detailed the timeline for integrating these platforms into the operational fleet. He noted that the service plans to have at least 500 of the CCA platforms in service by 2032.

“They’ll be performing many of the same missions that we do with manned fighters today,” Meink said, according to DefenseScoop.

The MMA program, designed to field a family of low-cost, multi-role strike platforms to succeed the General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper, is also being accelerated alongside the CCA initiative.

Reporting by The War Zone highlighted Meink’s comments on the MMA timeline. The Secretary stated the intent is to field 100 MMAs in 2029 at a lower cost than the CCAs and a fraction of the cost of current crewed aircraft. He added that 500 of the MMA platforms are expected to join the force by 2032.

Sweden Awards SEK 3.3 Billion for KFS Future Fighter Program

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) awarded SEK 3.3 billion in contracts to Saab AB and GKN Aerospace on September 9, 2026, advancing the nation’s independent Future Fighter System Concept (KFS) program from initial studies to the demonstrator phase.

Announced via a Saab press release, the funding secures development work through 2028 and solidifies Sweden’s strategy to maintain a sovereign aerospace industrial base following its 2023 departure from the UK-led Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). The contracts ensure Sweden retains the engineering capacity to either develop an indigenous successor to the JAS 39 Gripen E or enter a future international partnership with established technological leverage.

Advancing the Future Fighter System Concept

The procurement is split between Sweden’s two primary aerospace contractors. Saab AB will receive SEK 2.9 billion to lead the overall system design and platform development. GKN Aerospace was awarded SEK 390 million to focus on propulsion and engine technologies. The primary contract period covers 2026 through 2028, with the FMV holding options to extend the work into 2029 and 2030.

The KFS program, known in Swedish as Konceptprogram Framtida Stridsflygsystem, was formally initiated with study contracts in March 2024 and extended in October 2025. The contract awards follow closely on Saab’s public unveiling of a full-scale uncrewed combat air system concept, designated the A3-001. Saab presented the model on August 22, 2026, during the Jubilee Air Show at Malmen Air Base in Linköping, Sweden.

The A3-001 is designed as a low-observable, autonomous platform intended to operate as a loyal wingman alongside crewed fighters like the JAS 39 Gripen E. Saab envisions the uncrewed system taking on high-risk mission profiles, including electronic warfare and the suppression of enemy air defenses, thereby increasing the survivability and lethality of the crewed fleet.

“We are currently in an intensive development phase where, together with Sweden, we are exploring technologies that will lay the foundation for the next generation of combat air systems. As part of this work, we intend to fly uncrewed demonstrators with fighter-like characteristics before 2030 as we support Sweden in considering their future options,” said Peter Nilsson, Head of Business Unit Advanced Programs at Saab.

The integration of uncrewed systems is a central pillar of the KFS program, reflecting a broader industry shift toward collaborative combat aircraft architectures rather than relying solely on traditional, crewed sixth-generation fighter airframes.
