The Italian Air Forces (ItAF) will expand its uncrewed fleet with the acquisition of two additional MQ-9A Block 5 Reaper Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) and associated Ground Control Stations (GCS) from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI). The manufacturer announced the order in a September 8, 2026, press release, noting that deliveries are scheduled for the end of 2027.
The procurement falls under a broader Foreign Military Sale (FMS) approved by the U.S. State Department and announced by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on August 15, 2024. MQ-9A Block 5 capabilities and modernization
The MQ-9A Block 5 provides significant endurance and payload capacity for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Volatus Aerospace Chief Executive Officer Glen Lynch stated that the contract validates the company’s integrated model, which extends beyond hardware delivery to include technical support and payload integration.
“Canada is seeking sovereign, secure and supportable defence technologies that can be fielded efficiently and scaled as operational requirements evolve,” Lynch said.
