On March 11, 2026, at the VAI Verticon conference in Atlanta, Georgia, Bell Textron Inc. announced that the Pasadena Police Department (PPD) has placed a purchase order for two Bell 505 helicopters. According to the company’s press release, this acquisition marks the first time the Southern California law enforcement agency has selected the Bell 505 model to support its airborne operations.

The procurement is part of a broader initiative to modernize the department’s aging aerial fleet. In February 2026, the Pasadena City Council authorized a $12.6 million budget for the purchase of two new helicopters. To adapt these commercial airframes for specialized law enforcement duties, the department selected CNC Technologies as the prime contractor to design and integrate advanced tactical mission suites.

We recognize this upgrade as a significant development not only for the city of Pasadena but for the broader San Gabriel Valley. The new aircraft will enhance regional support capabilities, providing critical aerial overwatch for multiple neighboring municipalities that rely on Pasadena’s aviation infrastructure.

Fleet Modernization and Technical Specifications

The Pasadena Police Department currently operates a mixed fleet of legacy aircraft, including Bell 206B JetRangers, Bell OH-58s, and an MD 500E. The introduction of the Bell 505 is intended to streamline maintenance and introduce modern aviation safety features to the Air Operations Section.

The Bell 505 Platform

Introduced in 2014 and certified by the FAA in 2017, the Bell 505 is a short light single-engine helicopter designed for high visibility and operational versatility. According to Bell’s specifications, the aircraft features a maximum cruise speed of 125 knots (144 mph) and a useful load capacity of 1,500 pounds.

The helicopter is powered by a Safran Arrius 2R turboshaft engine, which delivers 505 shaft horsepower and features a dual-channel Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system. Furthermore, the cockpit is equipped with a fully integrated Garmin G1000H glass flight deck, which Bell notes is designed to reduce pilot workload and enhance situational awareness. The manufacturer states there are currently over 600 Bell 505s operating in 66 countries, having collectively surpassed 300,000 fleet flight hours.

“As a long-time Bell customer, we are thrilled the Pasadena Police Department has chosen the Bell 505 as the product of choice to demonstrate their mission capabilities. The Bell 505 provides our customers and operators versatility in mission performance and enhanced technical capabilities.”

, Lane Evans, Managing Director, North America Commercial Sales, Bell

Tactical Mission Suite Integration

To ensure the aircraft are ready for patrol, CNC Technologies is outfitting the helicopters with a comprehensive tactical suite. A key component of this integration is the Wescam MX-10, an advanced electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) imaging system. The department acquired its first Wescam MX-10 in 2020 and has been actively working to standardize this camera across its fleet.

Additional technology integrated by CNC Technologies includes tactical mapping capabilities, Night Vision Goggle (NVG)-compatible cockpit upgrades, high-intensity searchlights, and resilient real-time video transmission systems.

“CNC Technologies is proud to serve as the prime contractor for the Pasadena Police Department’s Bell 505 program. Our team is delivering a mission-ready capability with long-term support.”

, Alex Giuffrida, Managing Partner, CNC Technologies

Regional Impact and Operational History

The Pasadena Police Department’s Helicopter Section, established in 1969, is one of the oldest airborne law enforcement programs in the United States. The unit operates seven days a week, responding to an estimated 7,500 to 9,000 calls annually and logging approximately 3,500 flight hours per year. Department metrics indicate that the average response time for a PPD helicopter is just 72 seconds, with aircrews arriving as the first officers on the scene roughly 35% of the time.

The FAST Program and Mutual Aid

The impact of Pasadena’s Air Operations Section extends far beyond the city limits. In 1999, the department spearheaded the Foothill Air Support Team (FAST), a joint helicopter patrol operation. Through FAST, Pasadena provides regional air support to 10 neighboring partner cities, including Alhambra, Arcadia, Covina, Glendora, Monrovia, and Pomona, that do not maintain their own dedicated aviation units. Additionally, the unit supports the Los Angeles Interagency Metropolitan Police Apprehension Crime Task Force (LA IMPACT) with high-altitude surveillance personnel.

“This investment in our new Bell 505s represent a major step forward in how the Pasadena Police Department serves and protects our community. These aircraft give our Air Operations Section the enhanced capabilities needed to support officers on the ground, improve response times, and provide critical aerial support… This program strengthens our department’s ability to keep Pasadena safe today and well into the future.”

, Gene Harris, Pasadena Police Chief

AirPro News analysis

The $12.6 million investment authorized by the Pasadena City Council underscores the high capital costs associated with maintaining a premier airborne law enforcement unit. However, we note that standardizing the fleet with modern Bell 505s and Wescam MX-10 cameras is a strategic move that will likely reduce the department’s reliance on older, maintenance-heavy airframes like their legacy OH-58s.

Furthermore, the technological leap to the Bell 505 brings critical modern aviation safety features to the department. The dual-channel FADEC engine system is particularly vital for urban law enforcement operations, as it automatically provides a backup if one engine control channel fails, significantly enhancing safety during low-altitude patrols over densely populated areas of the San Gabriel Valley.

DFW Airport Opens First Four Terminal A Gates in 2026

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and American Airlines have commenced operations at the first four gates of the Terminal A Pier Expansion, marking a tangible milestone in the airport’s $12 billion capital improvement program.

Announced in a press release on October 21, 2026, the opening of gates A10, A11, A13, and A15 follows a multi-year construction effort that utilized prefabricated modular building techniques to minimize disruption at the world’s second-busiest airport. American Airlines began operating flights from the new gates in mid-October 2026.

Istanbul Aviation Forum, the meeting point of the global aviation industry, April 27-28, 2027

Modular construction minimizes airfield disruption

The Terminal A project adds 140,000 square feet to the existing footprint and will ultimately feature 10 gates, comprising five rebuilt and five net-new positions. The remaining six gates are expected to open to travelers during the 2026 winter holiday season.

To execute the expansion without shutting down active terminal areas, contractors utilized an industry-first modular construction method. In 2024, crews transported seven pre-built modules over 1.5 miles across the active airfield to the Terminal A project site. Prior to transport, 65% of the Mechanical Electrical Plumbing (MEP) work was already completed on the modules.

The expanded pier features wider thoroughfares, taller ceilings, brighter windows, intuitive wayfinding, new concessions, and updated restrooms designed to accommodate higher passenger volumes.

The $12 billion DFW Forward initiative

The Terminal A Pier Expansion is a central component of DFW Forward, a historic $12 billion capital improvement program designed to modernize aging facilities and accommodate future passenger growth at the North Texas hub.

The Terminal A expansion follows earlier 2026 milestones within the DFW Forward program. This includes the opening of nine new and rebuilt gates in Terminal C, which also utilized prefabricated modular construction transported across the airfield.

Airports globally are increasingly turning to modular and prefabricated construction to execute major capital projects. DFW’s deployment of this method for both the Terminal A and Terminal C expansions sets a precedent for large-scale infrastructure upgrades in constrained, high-traffic aviation environments.

American Airlines’ footprint in North Texas

DFW serves as the largest hub for American Airlines, which is headquartered in nearby Fort Worth, Texas. The carrier accounts for approximately 82% of the airport’s commercial passenger traffic, operating over 900 peak-day flights to 230 destinations.

The scale of the operation has a substantial regional impact. According to an August 2026 study by Texas Christian University (TCU), American Airlines’ DFW hub supports approximately $70 billion in annual economic output and sustains 350,000 jobs across the North America region.

The infrastructure upgrades are necessary to support this volume. DFW handled 85.7 million passengers in 2025, ranking it as the second-busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic and the third-busiest by aircraft movements.

AirPro News analysis

We view DFW’s successful deployment of modular construction across both Terminal A and Terminal C as a blueprint for other constrained mega-hubs. As passenger volumes push past 2019 peaks, operators can no longer afford to take large sections of terminal space offline for years at a time. By shifting the majority of the mechanical and electrical work off-site, DFW has demonstrated that capacity expansion and continuous hub operations are not mutually exclusive.

Upgraded passenger facilities and mainline capacity

The new three-level concourse replaces outdated infrastructure with 22 mainline gates, all equipped with jet bridges to accommodate larger aircraft. The architectural and operational upgrades are designed to streamline passenger flow and reduce congestion during peak departure banks.

A major focal point of the development is the 54,000-square-foot United Club. With a seating capacity of 800, it is now the largest lounge operated by any airline in the Americas. The terminal also incorporates local Houston dining brands, including B&B Butchers & Restaurant, Rosie Cannonball, Pizaro’s Pizza, Blood Bros. BBQ, Katz Coffee, and Blue Bell Creameries. The public spaces feature 10 major art installations and 11 sets of restrooms.

“I want our customers to start their vacation the minute they show up at the airport and Terminal B North sets a new standard for facilities across the country,” said United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby.

Funding and execution of the Terminal B Transformation Program

The opening of the North Concourse represents the most significant milestone in the broader Terminal B Transformation Program. The original Terminal B opened in 1969, and its infrastructure had become undersized for modern mainline aircraft operations and current passenger volumes.

United Airlines and the Houston Airport System (HAS) formally announced the $2.6 billion modernization initiative on November 7, 2023. The project secured critical municipal backing on March 6, 2024, when the Houston City Council voted to allocate $150 million toward the city’s portion of the expansion under a Memorandum of Agreement.

Once subsequent improvements to the South Concourse are completed, United will operate a total of 48 gates across Terminal B.

Kirby emphasized that the airline’s strategy extends beyond fleet modernization. “Houston is great example of our focus on the overall customer experience,” Kirby stated. “Yes, we’re investing in new aircraft, products and technology here, but we’re also focused on improving the infrastructure, building new concourses, baggage systems and training and maintenance facilities for our employees.”

Strategic growth at the Houston hub

United Airlines is the largest carrier globally as measured by available seat miles, and Houston serves as one of its primary domestic and international hubs. The airline is the largest operator at IAH, managing more than 500 daily departures and employing over 14,000 people in the region.

The completion of the North Concourse builds on a sustained period of capital expenditure by the carrier in Texas. Since 2015, United has invested $3.5 billion into its facilities and operations at IAH.

The immediate operational impact of the new concourse is a 40% increase in the number of passengers the airline can accommodate on peak travel dates in 2026, alleviating previous capacity constraints at the hub and supporting future schedule growth.
