Citi and Credendo Close USD 328M IndiGo Aircraft Financing

Citigroup Inc. and Belgian export credit agency Credendo have closed a USD 328 million financing facility for eight Airbus aircraft destined for Indian carrier IndiGo. The transaction marks the first export credit agency-backed aircraft financing structured through India‘s Gujarat International Finance Tec-City International Financial Services Centre.

Announced in a joint press release on October 13, 2026, the deal covers six Airbus A321s and two Airbus A320s. The agreement represents Credendo’s inaugural aviation financing transaction and provides IndiGo with a new channel of international liquidity as the airline shifts its long-term fleet strategy toward direct ownership.

Structuring through GIFT City

The financing was executed through IndiGo’s subsidiary, InterGlobe Aviation Financial Services IFSC Private Limited. The Indian government has prioritized the development of the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City International Financial Services Centre (GIFT IFSC) to position the country as a global aviation leasing hub capable of competing with established centers like Ireland and Singapore.

The GIFT IFSC framework permits cross-border aviation finance transactions in freely convertible foreign currency while remaining integrated within India’s legal and regulatory structure. This allows lessors to operate at international standards with tax-efficient provisions.

Citi acted as the sole mandated arranger, Export Credit Agency (ECA) coordinator, and sole lender for the transaction. K Balasubramanian, Citi’s India CEO and banking head, stated that the government incentives introduced for GIFT City have helped position India as an attractive destination for aircraft leasing.

“By combining Citi’s cross-border aviation and ECA financing expertise with Credendo’s credit insurance and IndiGo’s GIFT IFSC platform, we have delivered a first-of-its-kind solution,” Balasubramanian said.

Riyaz Peermohamed, Chief Aircraft Acquisition & Financing Officer at IndiGo, noted that the transaction demonstrates the potential of the GIFT IFSC to bring together international banks and export credit agencies to create innovative financing solutions for Indian aviation.

Credendo’s aviation market entry

The USD 328 million facility marks the first time Credendo has insured an aviation financing deal. Credendo operates as Belgium’s export credit agency and ranks as the fourth-largest credit insurance group in Europe. In 2025, the agency insured international trade worth 91 billion euros and earned 438 million euros in premium income.

Frank Vanwingh, group deputy CEO at Credendo, described the transaction as a significant milestone and the first step in a broader initiative aimed at enhancing support for the Belgian aviation industry.

“As our inaugural aircraft finance transaction, it demonstrates our ambition to become a long-term partner for Belgian aviation stakeholders seeking access to international opportunities and innovative financing structures,” Vanwingh said.

IndiGo’s shifting fleet strategy

IndiGo, formally InterGlobe Aviation Limited, operates as India’s largest airline by network and fleet size. The carrier currently manages a fleet of more than 430 aircraft and executes approximately 2,200 daily flights. During fiscal year 2026, the airline transported more than 123 million passengers.

The new financing aligns with a strategic shift in IndiGo’s capital structure. In June 2026, airline management outlined plans to increase the proportion of its total fleet under direct ownership to between 30 and 40 percent by fiscal year 2030. Historically, the carrier has relied heavily on the operating lease model, which accounted for 75 percent of its fleet in fiscal 2026.

Establishing the GIFT IFSC subsidiary allows IndiGo to diversify its long-term funding sources to support this transition toward higher direct ownership.

AirPro News analysis

This transaction serves as a critical proof of concept for India’s GIFT City initiative. Securing ECA-backed financing through the domestic IFSC framework validates the jurisdiction to international lenders who have historically preferred structuring Indian airline leases through Dublin or Singapore. For IndiGo, tapping into European export credit liquidity lowers the cost of capital required to execute its aggressive shift toward direct aircraft ownership. As the carrier moves to own up to 40 percent of a fleet projected to exceed 500 aircraft by the end of the decade, establishing reliable, tax-efficient pipelines to international debt markets is a structural necessity.

Japan Airlines Orders Up to 26 Embraer E190-E2 for J-AIR

Japan Airlines (JAL) has placed an order for up to 26 Embraer E190-E2 aircraft to modernize the fleet of its regional subsidiary J-AIR, with initial deliveries scheduled for fiscal year 2029.

The agreement, announced in a company press release on October 14, 2026, includes 16 firm orders and 10 options. The acquisition secures the long-term future of JAL’s domestic regional network and finalizes the carrier’s pivot away from the canceled Mitsubishi SpaceJet program.

Modernizing the regional fleet

J-AIR, based at Osaka International Airport (ITM), currently operates an all-Embraer fleet consisting of 32 aircraft. This includes 18 Embraer E170s and 14 first-generation Embraer E190s. The subsidiary serves as a critical link in the JAL Group network, connecting smaller regional communities across the Japanese archipelago to major urban centers.

The introduction of the E190-E2 aligns with the “JAL Group Management Vision 2035,” a strategic framework aimed at maintaining a sustainable domestic network amid shifting economic conditions. According to the press release, the E190-E2 offers significant improvements in fuel efficiency, reduced carbon dioxide emissions, and lower noise levels compared to the aircraft it will replace.

Mitsuko Tottori, President & Group CEO of Japan Airlines, stated that the company is delighted to welcome the new aircraft, highlighting its superior environmental performance and economic efficiency.

“In the future society envisioned under the ‘JAL Group Management Vision 2035,’ the domestic network serves as vital social infrastructure supporting local economies and everyday life across Japan. Through the introduction of this aircraft, we will maintain and develop a sustainable air network for the next generation, contributing to the future of Japan.”

The long road to a replacement platform

J-AIR has a long history with the Brazilian manufacturer, having operated Embraer aircraft since introducing the E170 in 2009 and adding the larger E190 in 2016. Despite this established relationship, JAL originally intended to transition its regional operations to a domestically produced airframe.

In 2015, the airline signed an agreement for 32 Mitsubishi SpaceJets, which were then marketed as the Mitsubishi Regional Jet. The program was intended to produce Japan’s first domestically built commercial airliner in half a century. Following years of developmental delays, certification challenges, and mounting costs, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries officially canceled the SpaceJet program in February 2023.

The formal termination of the SpaceJet program left JAL without a next-generation regional platform. The October 14 order for the E190-E2 resolves this operational uncertainty, providing a clear fleet strategy for J-AIR into the next decade.

Embraer consolidates Japanese market share

The JAL order cements Embraer’s position as the dominant regional aircraft provider in Asia-Pacific. The manufacturer has now secured E2 commitments from both of the country’s major airline groups, effectively locking out competitors in the regional market segment.

On September 4, 2026, rival carrier ANA Holdings finalized an order for eight additional E190-E2 jets. That transaction brought ANA’s total firm commitments for the type to 23 aircraft. Deliveries to ANA are expected to begin in 2028, one year ahead of JAL’s scheduled delivery timeline.

AirPro News analysis

We view JAL’s selection of the E190-E2 as the final chapter in the fallout from the Mitsubishi SpaceJet collapse. With both JAL and ANA now committed to the E2 family, Embraer has captured the entirety of the Japanese mainline regional market. This duopoly of orders provides Embraer with a stable, long-term revenue stream in a highly respected aviation market.

The E190-E2 is particularly well-suited to Japan’s current macroeconomic environment. The Japanese domestic aviation sector faces structural challenges, including a shrinking population, an aging demographic, and a long-term decline in traditional business travel demand. To maintain high-frequency domestic routes under these conditions, airlines require aircraft with lower trip costs and optimized capacity. The E2’s improved fuel efficiency also provides a necessary hedge against rising operational costs driven by inflation and currency headwinds.

Aera Aviation Capital Closes $300M Debut Aircraft Deal

Dublin-based Aera Aviation Capital has completed its debut transaction, arranging the acquisition of two commercial aircraft portfolios comprising eight narrowbody passenger jets for more than $300 million.

Announced on October 6, 2026, the transaction marks the inaugural deal for the leasing and asset management firm since its establishment in late 2025. The acquisition was executed in collaboration with Macquarie Asset Management and MUFG Bank Ltd, establishing Aera’s presence in the secondary aircraft leasing market.

Financing and partnership structure

The secondary-market acquisitions were funded through a combination of equity and debt. Equity financing was provided by a fund managed by Macquarie Asset Management, while MUFG Bank supplied the debt financing for the transaction. Aera Aviation Capital originated and arranged the deal and will assume management of the eight-aircraft portfolio following the completion of the acquisition.

The transaction represents the first collaboration between Aera and Macquarie Asset Management. Aera Chief Executive Officer Kieran Corr highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership for the newly formed lessor.

“We are excited to work with MAM, an investor with a global outlook and a long-term commitment to the aviation sector. It is a vote of confidence in the AERA team and its established reputation for expertise in the leasing sector,” Corr stated.

Portfolio composition and market strategy

The newly acquired portfolios consist entirely of new-generation narrowbody aircraft, specifically Airbus A320neo-family and Boeing 737 MAX jets. These asset types are currently in high demand across the global commercial aviation sector due to their fuel efficiency and operational economics.

Rather than relying on a single carrier, the aircraft are currently on lease to a diversified global customer base that includes both mainline and low-cost airlines. This structure provides Aera with immediate exposure to a broad group of airline customers in the secondary aircraft market, mitigating single-operator risk as the company builds its initial platform.

Aera Aviation Capital’s market entry

Headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, Aera Aviation Capital was established in late 2025 as a global aircraft leasing and asset management company. The firm offers both aircraft leasing and debt solutions, positioning itself as a co-investor and steward of partners’ capital with a focus on designing tailored financial structures for airlines.

The company’s executive leadership team includes Chief Executive Officer Kieran Corr, Chief Financial Officer Chris Helme, and Chief Commercial Officer Will McCallum. Following this $300 million debut transaction, Aera plans to utilize the eight-aircraft portfolio as an initial platform to drive further growth and expand its footprint in the global aviation leasing market.

Avolon Orders 250 Boeing and Airbus Jets in Fleet Expansion

Dublin-based aircraft lessor Avolon has committed to 250 new-technology aircraft across The Boeing Company and Airbus SE in a major fleet expansion announced on October 9, 2026. The order pushes the lessor’s total firm commitments to 749 aircraft and secures delivery slots through the next decade.

In a press release detailing its third-quarter 2026 business update, Avolon confirmed firm orders for 140 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and 110 Airbus jets, comprising 75 Airbus A320neo family and 35 Airbus A330neo family aircraft. The agreement also includes options for an additional 100 Airbus aircraft, positioning the company to capitalize on sustained airline demand amid ongoing manufacturer backlogs.

Securing long-term delivery pipelines

The dual-manufacturer order represents a significant capital commitment designed to support airline fleet renewal programs globally. Avolon Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Andy Cronin noted that the company continues to see strong demand for new-technology aircraft, which was reflected in its placement and trading activity during the quarter.

“Against that backdrop, we are pleased to have reached agreements with Airbus and Boeing that strengthen and extend our long-term delivery pipeline. These orders further enhance our ability to support the future fleet requirements of our airline customers as they renew and expand their fleets into the most fuel-efficient technology available,” Cronin stated.

According to filings from Avolon’s majority shareholder, Bohai Leasing Co., Ltd., the Airbus deliveries are scheduled for completion by December 31, 2035, while the Boeing aircraft are expected to be delivered through December 31, 2036. The firm orders remain subject to shareholder approval from Bohai Leasing, with a deadline expected before October 31, 2026.

Third-quarter 2026 operational performance

Alongside the aircraft order, Avolon released its operational metrics for the quarter ending September 30, 2026. The lessor executed 84 lease agreements, extensions, and amendments during the period. The company acquired 10 aircraft and sold 29, ending the quarter with 112 aircraft agreed for sale.

Avolon placed 28 new-technology aircraft from its commitments during the third quarter, bringing the percentage of its committed fleet placed for the next 24 months to 89%. At the close of the third quarter, Avolon reported an owned, managed, and committed fleet of 1,092 aircraft. Factoring in the new 250-aircraft order, the company’s pro forma fleet size increases to 1,342.

On the financing side, Avolon established a new US$1.5 billion commercial paper programme and closed a US$855 million unsecured term loan with a syndicate of primarily Asian banks.

The shifting landscape of aviation finance

Avolon operates as a joint venture, with China-based Bohai Leasing holding a 70% stake and Japanese financial institution ORIX Corporation holding the remaining 30%. The lessor market has grown highly consolidated, with leasing companies now owning approximately half of the global commercial airline fleet.

According to market context reported by Reuters, lessors have experienced robust demand from airlines in recent years. A persistent backlog of aircraft orders at major Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) has allowed companies like Avolon to sell older airframes and transition their portfolios toward more fuel-efficient, new-technology aircraft.

Concurrently, reporting from Aviation Week indicates that alternative lenders are growing their share of aviation finance in late 2026. Stricter bank capital requirements have created openings for specialized firms to fund aircraft acquisitions, altering the traditional funding structures that lessors and airlines rely upon.

AirPro News analysis

By locking in 250 firm delivery slots stretching into 2035 and 2036, Avolon is executing a massive hedge against prolonged supply chain constraints at both Boeing and Airbus. Lessors with guaranteed, near-to-medium-term delivery streams hold significant pricing power over airlines that cannot secure their own direct OEM slots before the end of the decade. The dual-source strategy across both major manufacturers mitigates the risk tied to any single program’s production rate challenges or certification delays, ensuring Avolon can meet operator demand regardless of isolated industrial bottlenecks.
