The handover marks a critical milestone for a $100 million engine contract signed in July 2022. The HTT-40 aircraft is designed to replace the Indian Air Force’s aging Kiran trainer fleet and address pilot training squadron shortages under the Indian government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) initiative.

Phased delivery and domestic assembly

According to a Honeywell press release, the company will supply a total of 16 engines directly to HAL. Following this initial batch, HAL will assume responsibility for the local assembly of the remaining powerplants, with more than 80 engines planned to support the HTT-40 program over the coming years.

Thandava Edara, Vice President of Engineering and Head of Aerospace Engineering for India at Honeywell Technology Solutions, stated that the collaboration underscores a shared commitment to strengthening local manufacturing, assembly, and long-term support capabilities in India.

The TPE331-12B features a single-shaft design that provides the immediate throttle response required for military pilot training. The broader TPE engine family encompasses 18 models and 106 configurations, accumulating over 122 million flight hours across more than 13,000 global deliveries.

Supply chain recovery and production targets

The June 11, 2026, delivery arrives after persistent supply chain bottlenecks impacted the program’s timeline. Reporting by Defence News India indicates that Honeywell missed an initial September 2025 deadline for the first engine delivery, pushing the timeline into mid-2026.

As a result of the delay, HAL revised its HTT-40 delivery targets in December 2025. In the Honeywell release, he noted that the deliveries mark a significant milestone for the program and stated confidence that future engine shipments will continue on schedule.

In a press release issued by the Mirabel, Québec-based company, Volatus confirmed an initial order of 100 tactical ISR systems. The contract includes options for the Canadian government to acquire up to 4,900 additional units over the five-year term to support land forces operations.

Procurement framework and financial details

The contract operates under a government procurement framework that establishes a maximum price of C$5,000 per system. While the total procurement envelope is capped at C$25 million, Volatus Aerospace noted that its specific contracted pricing remains commercially confidential.

The agreement covers an end-to-end solution for the Canadian Armed Forces. Beyond the delivery of the aircraft, the contract includes payloads, ground control stations, data links, training, and sustainment services.

Volatus Aerospace Chief Executive Officer Glen Lynch stated that the contract validates the company’s integrated model, which extends beyond hardware delivery to include technical support and payload integration.

“Canada is seeking sovereign, secure and supportable defence technologies that can be fielded efficiently and scaled as operational requirements evolve,” Lynch said.

Defence Drone Initiative integration

The September 10 award follows a September 3, 2026, announcement that Volatus Aerospace had qualified across all five work streams of the Government of Canada’s DDI Marketplace. The Ramjet-X announcement follows a period of significant growth for Hermeus. Earlier in 2026, the company achieved a post-money valuation of $1 billion and relocated its headquarters from Georgia to El Segundo, California, according to Axios.
