EgyptAir Accepts Delivery of First Airbus A350-900, Initiating Major Fleet Overhaul

EgyptAir has officially taken delivery of its first Airbus A350-900, registered as SU-GGE, marking a significant milestone in the carrier’s modernization strategy. The handover, which took place on February 9, 2026, positions the Cairo-based airline as the first operator of the A350-900 in North Africa.

According to an official press release from Airbus, this aircraft is the first of 16 A350-900s ordered by the Egyptian flag carrier. The delivery underscores EgyptAir’s commitment to phasing out older wide-body jets while expanding its long-haul network capabilities to new destinations in North America and Asia.

Fleet Modernization and Strategic Expansion

The arrival of the A350-900 represents a pivotal shift in EgyptAir’s long-haul operations. The airline originally signed for 10 aircraft during the Dubai Airshow in November 2023, later expanding the commitment with a top-up order for six additional units. These new airframes are intended to replace the carrier’s aging Boeing 777-300ER fleet, offering improved operating economics and passenger comfort.

In a statement regarding the initial order, Yehia Zakaria, EgyptAir Holding Chairman and CEO, highlighted the flagship status of the new type:

EgyptAir has outlined a phased entry-into-service plan for the new fleet. Initially, the aircraft will be deployed on trunk routes to London and Paris to facilitate crew familiarization. Following this integration period, the airline plans to leverage the A350’s 9,700 nautical mile range to launch non-stop services to the U.S. West Coast and key Asian markets, including Shanghai, Beijing, and Tokyo.

De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited has secured European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification for its DHC-6 Twin Otter Classic 300-G, clearing the path for European operations and deliveries to global regions that recognize the regulatory standard.

Announced in a press release on July 22, 2026, during the Farnborough Airshow, the regulatory approval marks a major milestone for the next-generation Twin Otter program. The certification validates the updated airframe and its modern avionics suite, enabling the manufacturer to expand its delivery footprint to operators requiring EASA compliance.

Zimex Aviation inaugurates European operations

The first EASA-certified Twin Otter Classic 300-G has already entered commercial service. On June 24, 2026, De Havilland Canada delivered the initial production aircraft, bearing serial number 998, to Switzerland-based Zimex Aviation Ltd. He stated that the manufacturer is pleased the first EASA-certified aircraft is already flying with Zimex Aviation, which demonstrates that the aircraft is delivering on its promise from day one.

Global fleet expansion and recent orders

The EASA certification announcement follows a series of recent delivery and sales milestones for the Classic 300-G program. On June 18, 2026, De Havilland Canada delivered the first of two Twin Otter Classic 300-G aircraft to Ethiopian Airlines. The African carrier is utilizing the aircraft to support regional connectivity across East Africa, operating in environments that require the short takeoff and landing capabilities inherent to the DHC-6 design.

The agreement, finalized at the Farnborough Airshow, marks the first orders of the new-generation turboprop for the Maldives, currently the largest Twin Otter operating market globally.

Announced via a company press release, the acquisition will support inter-island transportation, tourism, and regional connectivity across the Maldivian archipelago. The Twin Otter has long been a foundational asset for aviation in the region, and the introduction of the Classic 300-G variant aims to modernize the local fleet with updated technology.

Island Aviation Services Limited will become the first operator in the country to bring the Classic 300-G into service. Luxair has finalized an agreement with Embraer to convert three Embraer E190-E2 purchase rights into firm orders, advancing the Luxembourg flag carrier’s strategy to transition to a streamlined, two-type fleet by the end of the decade.

Announced on July 21, 2026, during the Farnborough International Airshow, the transaction increases Luxair’s firm E2 order book to nine aircraft. According to an Embraer press release, the airline also secured one additional purchase right as part of the deal, providing further flexibility for its regional network expansion.

Fleet modernization and E190-E2 configuration

The newly ordered Embraer E190-E2 Commercial-Aircraft are scheduled to begin arriving in late 2028. Reporting by Aviation Week indicates that Luxair plans to configure the aircraft with 100 seats. This specific capacity allows the airline to optimize crew requirements, as the 100-seat threshold permits operation with just two flight attendants.

Luxair Chief Executive Officer Gilles Feith told Aviation Week that the E190-E2s will play a crucial role in managing capacity across different times of the day. Feith noted that the aircraft will support high-frequency routes while efficiently serving mid-day connections that typically experience lower passenger demand.

The introduction of the E190-E2 is a key component of Luxair’s plan to retire its older turboprop fleet. Aviation Week reports that the airline currently operates 11 De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 aircraft, which are slated for phase-out as the new Embraer jets enter service.

Building a two-type fleet architecture

Luxair already operates four Embraer E195-E2 aircraft within its network and holds firm Orders for two more. The addition of the three E190-E2s brings the total E2 commitment to nine airframes, allowing the carrier to leverage full cross-crew qualification and maintenance commonality between the two variants.

Embraer Commercial Aviation President and CEO Arjan Meijer highlighted the operational benefits of the aircraft in the company’s official announcement.

“We are delighted that Luxair has chosen to further grow its E2 fleet with this additional order. The E190-E2 combines outstanding economics, operational efficiency, and passenger comfort, making it the ideal aircraft for airlines seeking sustainable growth.”

The Airlines is also expanding its narrowbody operations. During the same Farnborough event, Aviation Week reported that Luxair converted two Boeing 737 MAX 10 options into firm orders. This brings the carrier’s total Boeing commitment to eight Boeing 737 MAX 8s and four Boeing 737 MAX 10s. Together, the Embraer E2 family and the Boeing 737 MAX family will form the backbone of Luxair’s targeted two-type fleet by early 2030.

In the near term, Luxair is preparing to expand the operational footprint of its existing E2 fleet. The airline plans to begin operating its E195-E2s at London City Airport (LCY) later in 2026, pending the completion of pilot training required for the airport’s mandatory steep approach procedures.
