A heavily modified Gulfstream IV has returned to MIT Lincoln Laboratory in Massachusetts following a seven-year structural modernization program in Canada, preparing the Military-Aircraft to serve as a specialized airborne research platform for the U.S. Air Force.

The aircraft, operated by the laboratory’s Tactical Defense Systems Group and Flight Test Facility (FTF), will support the Air Vehicle Survivability Evaluation (AVSE) program. According to an August 31, 2026, announcement from MIT, the modernized jet is expected to remain in operational service for 25 to 30 years, replacing a Gulfstream II that had supported the program since the early 1990s.

Extensive structural modifications

FTF pilots originally flew the G-IV to Toronto in December 2018 for a project expected to take three to four years. The timeline ultimately extended to seven years due to disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic and shifts in contractor management. To maintain momentum, MIT Lincoln Laboratory engineers, mechanics, and legal teams secured Canadian work permits, allowing them to establish a continuous onsite presence.

David Culbertson, FTF manager, noted that the team made hundreds of trips to Canada and dedicated countless weekends to keep the project moving forward. Between October 2024 and January 2025, FTF mechanics completely disassembled and reassembled the cockpit to accommodate the new nose extension.

Rather than upgrading the aircraft in phases, MIT Lincoln Laboratory opted to complete all anticipated modifications during this single maintenance period.
