Maintenance, repair and overhaul is the industry that keeps the world’s fleet airworthy — and, in the current cycle, one of the tightest markets in aviation. Delayed deliveries of new aircraft have kept older jets flying longer; engine reliability issues have filled shop queues; and hangar capacity, skilled labour and spare parts are all short. That combination has made MRO capacity a strategic asset for airlines and a magnet for investment and consolidation. What we watch
- Capacity. New hangars and engine shops, capability additions, and where airlines are sending heavy checks — North America, Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia.
- Engines. Shop-visit demand for the CFM56, V2500, LEAP and GTF families, the parts and turnaround-time pressures behind it, and the engine MRO joint ventures being formed to meet it.
- Contracts and consolidation. Long-term maintenance agreements, component support deals, acquisitions and joint ventures across independent MROs, OEM aftermarket arms and airline maintenance divisions.
- Parts and approvals. Used serviceable material, teardowns, PMA parts and DER repairs, and regulatory approvals such as FAA Part 145 and EASA Part-145 certifications for new facilities.
- Workforce and technology. Technician shortages and training programmes, digital records, predictive maintenance and the tools changing hangar work.
