Bell Textron Begins AH-1Z Viper Production for Nigerian Air Force

Bell Textron Inc. has officially commenced production on the first of 12 Bell AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), marking the milestone with a beam-signing ceremony at its Amarillo Assembly Center in Texas on September 16, 2026.

The manufacturing milestone advances a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement designed to bolster Nigeria’s counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations. According to a press release issued by Bell, the initial structural beam will carry the signatures of the teams involved in bringing the aircraft to the production line.

Advancing the Nigerian AH-1Z Viper program

The U.S. State Department initially approved the possible FMS package for Nigeria in April 2022, with an estimated total value of $997 million covering the 12 helicopters, associated weapons, training, and support equipment. In March 2024, the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) awarded Bell Textron a $455 million firm-fixed-price contract specifically for the production and delivery of the aircraft.

Integration and support planning have been underway for several years. In June 2025, the U.S. Marine Corps H-1 Light/Attack Helicopter Program Office hosted a Program Management Review with NAF officials in California. A U.S. government delegation subsequently met with NAF authorities in Abuja, Nigeria, in February 2026 to finalize the comprehensive Program and Support Plan, ensuring facilities and logistics are prepared for the fleet’s arrival.

NAF Spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame stated that the platform will play an important role in strengthening the nation’s security operations and protecting its citizens.

“We are pleased with the Viper’s advanced capabilities and interoperability and look forward to its induction as a key platform in our attack helicopter fleet,” Ejodame said.

Production timelines and strategic context

Bell projects that aircraft production will be completed in early 2029. This represents an adjustment from the original March 2024 U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) contract announcement, which anticipated work completion by July 2028.

Scott Sims, Bell H-1 Program Director, noted the collaborative effort required to reach the manufacturing phase and the dedication of the employees supporting the international partner.

“The beam of the first production Viper for Nigeria will forever carry the names, hopes, and commitment of those who brought this aircraft to life,” Sims said.

The helicopter procurement aligns with ongoing bilateral security cooperation between the United States and Nigeria. In September 2026, the U.S. Africa Command facilitated the delivery of additional military equipment to Nigeria via a U.S. Air Force Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, underscoring the active counterterrorism partnership between the two nations.
