Cessna SkyCourier UX Uncrewed Cargo Concept Unveiled
Textron Aviation and Merlin unveiled the Cessna SkyCourier UX, an autonomous cargo concept for USAF contested logistics missions.
Textron Aviation Inc. and autonomous flight developer Merlin, Inc. unveiled the Cessna SkyCourier UX concept aircraft on September 14, 2026, proposing an uncrewed, forward-loading cargo variant of the twin-engine utility turboprop designed specifically for Military-Aircraft logistics.
Introduced at the Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) Air, Space & Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland, the concept aims to address the United States Air Force (USAF) requirement for sustaining distributed forces in contested environments. According to a joint press release, the design removes the traditional cockpit to maximize cargo utility, targeting the gap between small tactical drones and heavy military airlifters.
Designing for contested logistics
The military concept of contested logistics focuses on resupplying forward-deployed units in areas where traditional heavy transport aircraft face high threat levels or lack suitable runway infrastructure. The Cessna SkyCourier UX is intended to fulfill the “Last Tactical Leg” of these supply chains without risking aircrew.
To optimize the airframe for autonomous cargo operations, the concept design eliminates the flight deck entirely. This alteration enables a forward-loading architecture featuring a large nose opening and an aircraft kneeling capability. The companies stated that these modifications, combined with integrated loading systems, are designed to facilitate rapid cargo handling in austere locations.
The uncrewed variant retains the core capabilities of the FAA certified Cessna SkyCourier platform. It is projected to carry a payload of approximately 6,000 pounds and accommodate up to three LD3 Cargo-Aircraft containers.
Integrating the Merlin Pilot system
The autonomous capabilities of the Cessna SkyCourier UX rely on the Merlin Pilot software system. Merlin has previously integrated and tested its autonomous flight technology on other Textron Aviation platforms, including the Cessna Caravan and Beechcraft King Air.
Matt George, CEO and founder of Merlin, emphasized the necessity of combining established technologies for military applications.
“Solving contested logistics today takes proven autonomy and a proven airframe. This concept pairs it with a proven platform, the Cessna SkyCourier, to explore what an aircraft could look like when it’s designed around autonomy and cargo instead of a crew.”
Bob Gibbs, Vice President of Defense and Special Mission Sales at Textron Aviation, noted that the concept reflects a commitment to addressing real-world mission challenges by adapting certified products for distributed operational environments.
Current program status
While the base Cessna SkyCourier is an active production aircraft, the UX variant currently exists as a design study and scale model. Textron Aviation and Merlin have not yet announced a launch customer or established a timeline for prototype manufacturing and production.
The development of the concept will likely depend on further engagement with the USAF and other defense operators regarding their specific requirements for autonomous tactical airlift.

By leveraging an existing, FAA-certified Part 23 utility aircraft rather than developing a clean-sheet design, Textron Aviation and Merlin can significantly reduce development risk and timeline. The removal of the cockpit to allow front-loading is a structural challenge, but it solves the primary limitation of side-loading cargo doors in austere environments where specialized ground handling equipment is unavailable. The success of this concept will hinge on the military’s willingness to fund the structural modifications required to turn the standard SkyCourier into a dedicated uncrewed freighter.
