Bombardier Global 8000 Approved for London City Airport
The U.K. CAA has approved the Global 8000 for London City Airport steep approaches, effective September 10, 2026.
Bombardier‘s ultra-long-range Global 8000 business jet has secured approval from the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to conduct steep approaches and land at London City Airport (LCY), effective September 10, 2026. The certification allows operators to bypass peripheral airfields and connect global financial hubs directly to London’s center, saving passengers up to 90 minutes in ground transfer time compared to using alternative business aviation airports outside the city.
In a press release issued by Bombardier Inc., the manufacturer confirmed the regulatory milestone for its flagship aircraft. London City Airport imposes strict operational constraints, including a steep approach requirement for noise abatement and a short runway, limiting the types of aircraft permitted to operate there.
Engineering for constrained environments
Operating at London City Airport requires specialized aircraft capabilities due to its central location and local noise-abatement regulations. The Global 8000 meets these stringent requirements through an advanced wing design that incorporates leading-edge slats and a robust braking system, enabling the necessary steep approach profile and short-field stopping performance.

The CAA approval is specifically limited to Global 8000 aircraft registered within jurisdictions where the steep approach supplement has been approved by the relevant national aviation authority.
Certification timeline and performance specifications
The U.K. CAA approval follows a series of regulatory milestones for the Global 8000 program. The aircraft received Type Certification from Transport Canada (TC) in November 2025, followed by U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification and official entry into service in December 2025. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) granted its certification in January 2026.
Bombardier notes the Global 8000 is the fastest civil aircraft in production since the Concorde, featuring a top speed of Mach 0.95. The business jet offers a maximum range of 8,000 nautical miles (NM) and maintains a cabin altitude of 2,691 feet. This range allows direct flights from London to destinations such as Singapore, Los Angeles, Honolulu, and Buenos Aires.
