GE Aerospace Wins DIU Contract for Hypersonic Test Bed

GE Aerospace has secured a contract from the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to advance the development of a liquid-fueled hypersonic test bed, moving the program into full integration and qualification testing.

Announced on September 1, 2026, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the award falls under the Hypersonic and High-Cadence Airborne Testing Capabilities (HyCAT) program. According to the company press release, the initiative aims to create an all-up-round (AUR) test bed combining a booster and cruiser system, designed to facilitate high-cadence hypersonic testing for next-generation defense applications.

Advancing the HyCAT program

The DIU initially awarded funding to GE Aerospace in 2023 to support concept development and team formation. The manufacturer spent 2024 refining and evaluating subsystems before advancing to a preliminary design review of the AUR in 2025.

The newly awarded 2026 phase focuses on the full integration of the AUR and component-level testing. This progression marks a critical step in fielding a viable hypersonic testing platform.

Steve “Doogie” Russell, Vice President and General Manager of Edison Works at GE Aerospace, emphasized the necessity of the program’s pace.

“Acceleration in this type of hypersonic testing are critical to advancing next-generation capabilities at speed and scale,” Russell stated.

Strategic defense applications

The development of a combined booster and cruiser system provides the military with a dedicated platform to test hypersonic technologies. High-cadence testing is a stated priority for the DIU to accelerate the deployment of advanced aerospace systems.

Russell noted that the contract reflects ongoing efforts by the manufacturer to support military requirements.

“This work with DIU builds on years of investment and progress, and we are proud to help deliver a flexible, responsive test solution to support national defense priorities,” Russell said.
