Heart Aerospace X1 Completes First Flight at Plattsburgh

Heart Aerospace successfully completed the inaugural flight of its X1 demonstrator on August 12, 2026, marking the first time a battery-electric aircraft exceeding 25,000 pounds has taken to the skies. The 27-minute flight at Plattsburgh International Airport (KPBG) in New York validates core technologies for the manufacturer’s planned 30-seat hybrid-electric regional airliner.

In a press release issued on August 13, 2026, the company confirmed the Heart X1 reached an altitude of 1,100 feet above ground level while delivering more than one megawatt of power. The milestone follows the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issuing a Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category (SAC-EC) for the aircraft in July 2026, which authorized flight testing after a series of structural, propulsion, and taxi evaluations.

Demonstrating commercial-scale electric propulsion

The X1 demonstrator features a 106-foot wingspan, a length of 76 feet, and a height of 24 feet. Heart Aerospace reported the electricity cost for the inaugural flight was approximately $5, a figure the company highlighted to emphasize the economic potential of Electric-Aviation.

Heart Aerospace founder and chief executive officer Anders Forslund stated the flight proved electric aviation is viable at the scale of a commercial airliner.

“Electric commercial aircraft have the potential to fundamentally reshape airline economics and, ultimately, lower the cost of air travel for passengers. This is at the heart of our vision for abundant air travel, with electrification enabling more affordable, frequent, and cleaner air service to and from airports closer to home.”

Pathway to the ES-30 regional airliner

Data gathered from the X1 flight test program will directly inform the development of the Heart ES-30. The ES-30 is designed as a 30-seat hybrid-electric regional aircraft targeting a 2031 entry into service. Heart Aerospace projects the ES-30 will reduce operating costs by more than 40 percent compared with legacy regional aircraft.

The Manufacturers is currently building the first pre-production ES-30 at its pilot manufacturing facility in Los Angeles, California, with flight testing scheduled to begin in 2028. The company relocated its corporate headquarters from Gothenburg, Sweden, to Los Angeles in April 2025 to expand its United States operations, subsequently moving the X1 aircraft to Plattsburgh for flight testing.
